Porcelain Dinnerware VS Ceramic Dinnerware

How to Make Your Own Ceramic Dinnerware

Decorative dinnerware is always a fun way to add to the décor of your kitchen. Sometimes it is not always easy to find the right dinnerware design that you may like. Choosing to make your own ceramic dinnerware is a creative way to design your own dishes, learn a new skill and create a conversational piece to discuss with your guests.

For this task you will need clay, molds, acrylic paint and a gloss varnish. Visit your local pottery studio for the equipment used to create the ceramics if you do not have the tools at home.

1. Mix clay with water to create a very thick liquid. This is called a clay slip. You may use fresh or old clay for this process as long as the clay can get soft to create the liquid mixture.

2. Choose the mold that you desire to use for your piece of dinnerware. Molds can be obtained for your local arts and crafts store or at the place you choose to make your ceramics. Pour the clay into the mold and drain any excess liquid. Wait at least an hour for the mold to dry.

3. Remove the dried clay from the mold. This can now be referred to as a casting. Give the casting at least a day to dry. Buff away any lines or grains left behind by the mold with sandpaper.

4. Place the casting into the kiln at about 2000 degrees. Allow the proper amount of time for the casting to completely harden.

5. Paint your ceramic dinnerware with acrylic paint however you wish. Use a glaze varnish for a glossy look.
