How to Use the Snellen Eye Chart

How to Make Your Own Eye Chart

The Snellen chart is a very common eye chart used in doctors’ offices. These charts are able to help you determine how good or poor your eyesight is. Some people choose to make an eye chart to monitor their own eyesight.

Items Needed:

  • Poster Board

  • Stencils

  • Black Markers

  • Ruler

  • Tape

  • Tacks

  1. Purchase a large poster board at an arts and crafts store to make the chart. Make sure the chart is large enough so you can fit many rows of letters at different sizes. Also purchase multiple sized stencils and black markers at the arts and crafts store. Remember you shouldn't be making this chart for diagnosing your own eye site problems. The chart should only be used to monitor your eyesight between visits to the doctor.

  2. Create to rows of letters on the eye chart with the stencils and markers. Make sure the rows are straight by using a ruler. An eye chart with crooked rows will only cause confusion when testing your eyesight. Make sure to only use black markers so the letters are visible and not confusing.

  3. Attach the eye chart to a wall with very little distractions around it. Pictures and other objects next to the eye chart will only cause more problems when testing your eyesight. Use tape or tacks to attach the eye chart to the wall. Make sure you stand the same distance apart each time you test your eyes to get an accurate reading on if your eyesight is improving or decreasing.
