How to Make Your Own Hair Extensions
Using hair extensions can add volume and length to your natural hair. The problem is that hair extensions can be very expensive. It is very easy to make your own hair extensions for only a fraction of the cost of purchasing extensions already made. It will take you some time, so make sure you have enough time to complete the task and not be rushed.
- Visit a beauty supply store and purchase the things you will need. Ask a sales associate to help you find hair extensions that match your hair color and texture. Purchase hair dye to change the color of the extensions if your hair color cannot be found. Buy hair extension clips. They do not cost very much so it would be better to buy too many than to have to buy more in the middle of the job. Decide if you want to glue the hair to the clips or sew them. Talk to the sales associate to help you decide which would be better for you. Purchase either extension glue or thread and a needle. Scissors will need to be used whether you glue the extensions or sew them.
- Take your supplies home and prepare them for the job. Wash the hair extensions just as you would your own hair. Use the shampoo and conditioner you normally use. Let the hair dry and carefully comb it out. Dye the hair if needed according to the package directions.
- Determine the size you want the extensions to be. Measure your head to decide what size would be best for you. If you don’t know, just make them each four inches wide.
- Double the measurement you determined and cut the hair extensions to the width. Cut the hair at the top where it is sewn together. Fold the extensions in half and secure them together with the glue or thread at the top. This will give your hair more volume. The extensions are very thin if you do not do this step.
- Secure the clips to the hair extensions at the top. Use either the glue or needle and thread. Be sure the clips are attached correctly. You want the comb part away from the hair extension, this comb will attach to your own hair.
- Place the extensions in your hair and enjoy the extra length and volume. Because the extensions are human hair, you can style them any way you style your own hair.
