How to Make Your Own Online Newspaper Articles

Create your own online news articles for an entertaining, money making way to pass the time. Plenty of places exist on the web today where you can place an article. Submit your completed news stories on your personal blog, to a news website, or add your content to a general contributor's website.

Things You'll Need:

  • Story topic

  • Active voice

  • Sources

  • Publishing platform

  1. Decide whether or not your topic is considered newsworthy. Gather ideas by looking into what interests the general public.

  2. Start your online newspaper article with a catchy phrase or sentence. Your goal includes hooking readers at the get go. You want to write fresh, engaging and factual content in order to please online readers.

  3. Place the most important information at the top of the piece and the meat to fill in your story toward the bottom. Newspaper writers refer to this process as "inverted pyramid" writing.

  4. Keep your voice active throughout the entire piece. Avoid the use of “passive voice” because active verbs and sentences keeps the rhythm going through your article.

  5. Include the who, what, where and when and why of the piece. Add as much information about each of the “5-W's” as you can in your story.

  6. Follow the Associated Press style guide when crafting your story. Newspapers around the world use the AP style as their primary writing style.

  7. Attribute your sources, either within your article or at the bottom of the page. It's very important to include where you gathered your information. Online readers want to read articles based in fact.

  8. Shorten the length of your paragraphs to between one and three sentences. Keep the sentences short and easy to digest throughout the entire piece.

  9. Include bold subheadings and HTML formatting tricks to make your piece easy on the eyes.

  10. Allow search engines to find your article by creating a title that's easy for your readers to find. Include relevant keywords to your piece. Apply the use of both long and short tags.

  11. Find places where you can submit your article such as “Hub Pages,” “Yahoo! Contributor Network,” “Suite 101” and “Blogger.”
