How to Make Your Wireless Internet Faster

Wireless Internet has made it possible to go online without the need to be tethered to a wired connection, making it easy to shop, check email and perform a number of other functions from just about anywhere.  As with any online connection, there are things consumers can do to help boost the speed and efficiency of that connection, making the wireless service all the more valuable.

  • Look into the capabilities of the wireless card in your laptop or other device.  Cards that have a lower capacity will result in a slower connection, even if your wireless carrier is providing a robust signal.  The same is true of the wireless modem being used for the connection for a home network.  When this is the case, upgrading the card or modem will make a significant difference.

  • Consider possible obstructions that are interfering with the signal.  Be particularly aware of any large appliances or complicated wiring systems that may be in the direct line of the signal between the wireless modem or server and the present location of your laptop.  When this is the case, simply moving to another area of the room may help strengthen the connection.

  • Relocate the router.  One way to get the most from your Internet connection in terms of speed is to elevate the wireless router so there is less interference.  Most routers are small enough to be placed on a wall shelf rather than requiring them to reside on a desk next to a computer that serves as a server for the home network.  By positioning the router above some of the sources of interference, you will likely find that the signal remains stronger in more areas of the house.

  • Identify the top speed offered by your carrier.  This is usually different from the “up to” speed that is noted in the sales pitches of various carriers.  Compare that to the average speeds offered by other providers in the area.  You may be able to switch to a different carrier and enjoy faster speeds without making any changes to your equipment, and without paying any additional monthly fees.
