How to Make a Big Game Fishing Lure Mold
When fishing for big game fish such as swordfish, marlin or tuna, you want the best lures you can afford. This can get expensive, so a cheaper alternative is to mold your own lures. One mold can make hundreds of lures, and you can color them as desired. When you learn how to make a big game fishing lure mold, you can make as many lures as you want without spending a fortune.
Items Needed:
- Plaster of Paris
- Aluminum pie plate
- Big game fishing lure
- Petroleum jelly
- Two bolts
- Putty knife
- Scraper
- Sealant
- Pour plaster of Paris into a round aluminum pie plate and fill it up halfway.
- Coat the big game fishing lure you are going to mold with petroleum jelly.
- Press half of the lure into the plaster of Paris in the pie plate. Do not cover the lure completely. Place the lure about 1/2 inch from the edge of the pie plate.
- Place two bolts coated in petroleum jelly into the plaster so that they stick up and out of the mold. These are guides so you can match up the second mold.
- Apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly to the entire surface of the plaster, after the plaster hardens around the big game fishing lure.
- Pour plaster over the top of lure, fill the pie plate to the top and let this layer dry.
- Turn the pie plate upside down so the plaster mold slides out.
- Work around the edges of the two mold layers with the putty knife and carefully pry them apart.
- Scrape out a pouring hole from both pieces of the mold. Start at the outside edge close to the mold cavity and scrape until you reach the mold cavity. Make sure the holes line up when you place the mold together.
- Scrape out a small venting hole from the edges of the mold into the mold cavity in both pieces of the mold.
- Coat in and around the mold cavities, the pouring hole and the venting holes with sealant.
