How to Make a Fishing Rod From Round Bamboo
Some fishermen prefer to fish with a bamboo rod instead of the tradition rod and reel because they feel the poles are better for catching certain types of fish. Not only are they easier to fish with, but also they are also a lot less expensive. Bamboo rods can be purchased at most sporting goods stores, but it is much cheaper to make the pole yourself.
Items Needed:
- 1 Round bamboo pole at least 8-feet or longer
- Fishing line
- Fishing hook
- Knife
- Sandpaper
- Bobber
- Fishing line weight
- Remove all of the rough edges on the piece of bamboo using a sharp knife.
- Use a piece of fine-grade sandpaper to continue to smooth out the rough areas. Pay close attention to the handle of the pole since this is the place where you will be holding the rod.
- Use the knife to carve a notch into the small end of the pole. The notch should be in the shape of a "V" and go all the way through the pole from one side to the other.
- Attach the fishing line to the pole. This should be done by threading the line through the smaller end of the pole and up through the "V" shaped notch.
- Use the knife to cut the fishing line leaving it approximately 15-feet in length.
- Attach the weight to the end of the line. It should be attached approximately 6-inches from the end of the line.
- Attach a hook to the end of the line and secure by tying a knot in the line.
- Place the bobber on the fishing line approximately 5-inches from the end of the pole and tie to secure.
