How to Make a Costume Bookcase
Costume bookcases come in a variety of shapes, styles and colors. You don’t have to be an expert craftsman to make a costume bookcase; with the knowledge listed below and a little spare time, making a costume bookcase is easy.
Materials Needed
- 2 pieces of 2-by-10 lumber, 6 feet long
- 4 pieces of 1-by-10, 32 inches long
- "L" brackets
- saw
- 1 piece of 1/4" plywood.
- Brads (1/2") and screws (#8 3/4" long)
- Sandpaper, stain and paint
- Drill and drill bits
- Screwdriver and hammer
- Sand and paint all of the lumber pieces. Once finished paint the boards as well as the plywood. The 32-inch sections of lumber will be used to create the top, bottom and the shelves of the bookcase. The 72-inch pieces of lumber will serve as the vertical sides of the bookcase.
- Measure a rough estimate of the spacing for your bookshelf. This spacing will depend on the size and amount of books that are being stored. Mark the spacing on the sides of the 72-inch pieces of lumber.
- Attach L-brackets to the sides of the bookcase lining up with the dimensions of the desired height of the shelves. Place one L-bracket three inches in from the front and three inches in from the back at each shelve interval. There will be four L-brackets for each shelf. Paint the brackets to match the bookcase.
- Measure the plywood to fit the skeleton of the bookcase and connect it to the casing using brads.
