How to Make a Family Budget
A family budget will help you stop living from paycheck to paycheck and start either paying off debt or saving for a rainy day. Budgets help define how your money is being spent. Don't think of a budget as stifling your lifestyle but instead as providing a road map towards your future goals.
Start by writing out a list of all of your monthly fixed costs. Then write down a list of all of the things that will fluctuate throughout the month, such as food and gas. There will also be items that only come up a few times a year, such as car repairs. Take note of these items as well. Don't worry if you don't think of everything right now. Your family budget will always be a work in progress.
Now list all of the sources on income that you can expect each month. Hopefully, it is more than your expenses. If it's not, hopefully your new budget will help fix that.
Keep track of everything you spend each month and at the end of the month compare it to what you listed as your expenses. This will allow you to tweak what you are really spending and you will hopefully notice areas where you are doing well and areas where you could use some improvement.
The more detailed your budget is, the more it will help you trim some areas and put the excess either towards debt or savings.
There are several online budgeting sites and various software programs that you can use to help set up and maintain your family budget. YNAB or You Need A Budget is a great program to help set up and run family budgets. It's easy to set up and there is a lot of customer support to help you get started.
