How to Make a Permanent Book Shelf

If you own a lot of books then you may be in the market for a permanent book shelf. A book shelf can help you feel organized with your books and other belongings. With a few pieces of wood and a day of sunshine you can be on your way to building the perfect permanent book shelf.

Items Needed:

  • Lumber

  • Measuring Tape

  • Hammer/Nails

  • Drill Bit/Screws

  • Wall Brackets

  1. Measure the space you have available for your bookshelf. You can place the bookshelf in the corner of the room or up against a free wall. This is a great time to decide on the size of your bookshelf. Make sure to measure how far out your bookshelf will reach from the wall.

  2. Start measuring your pieces of lumber. For the lumber pieces, you will need a back, sides and 3-4 shelves. Measure according to the space you have available. Also consider placing a top and bottom on the bookshelf; but that is optional.

  3. Cut out the back part of the bookshelf. This part is not necessary unless you want to protect your walls. Otherwise, you can drill the sides and actual shelving right onto the wall.

  4. Cut out the sides and shelves of the bookshelf as well.

  5. Sand and stain the wood to make it the style of your choice. Since this bookshelf is going to be permanent, make sure it matches the interior of your home.

  6. Drill the back part of the bookshelf onto the wall.

  7. Put the wall brackets onto the wall. This helps hold the bookshelf into place. You only need these if you are not installing the back piece onto the wall. The sidepieces will slide right into the wall bracket with a drill bit and screws.

  8. Slide the sidepieces into the wall brackets.

  9. Attach the shelves onto the bookshelf with stoppers. You can place these stoppers right below the shelf so the shelf has support and will stay up.
