How to Make a Plate Rack Shelf
If you are a collector of plates then a great way to show them off is by making a plate rack shelf. You can add molding to create an attractive design and also stain or paint your shelves to match the decor of the room.
- Choose the area for your shelf. Select the room that you would like to build your plate shelf in. The living room or study are both great choices for displaying your plate collection.
- Cut your boards. The length of the boards will depend on how many plates you have to display. If you are a collector, take into consideration the amount of spacing you want to leave for additional plates that you may acquire in the future.
- Mark your measurements. Measure in from the front of the board 4-inches out and then make a straight line horizontally with a pencil. Make marks in from each side 1/2 inch with the pencil. Next, make a slot for the plate edges to sit in. The slots need to be at least 1/4 by 1/4 inch.
- Cut your molding. Trim the front and side pieces of the crown molding 1 inch shorter than the shelf itself. Bevel the edges to form the molding into a base. You will need to have two outer corners and an angle against the wall. Place a bead of carpenter's glue on the corners and fit them together. Strengthen the corners with saw pin nails.
- Paint your shelf. Apply paint or stain to your shelf and allow to dry according to the time frame listed on the instructions. Connect wall hangers to the back of the shelf. You can now set your plates on your shelving.
