How to Make an Ice Cream Cake

Ice cream cakes are delicious and unique. They are fun for birthday cakes and holiday celebrations. Usually, ice cream cakes are expensive to purchase from a store. Making one takes some time and patience. With a few simple steps, anyone can make an ice cream cake. Here’s how:

  1. Determine what size and shaped cake you would like to make. You will need to use pans in the shape desired. Circular or square cakes that measure 8 or 9 inches are most common.

  2. Purchase the type of ice cream you wish to use in the cake. Most people use vanilla, chocolate or both; however, a variety of flavors may be used for the cake.

  3. Pour ice cream into two separate pans. Smooth the ice cream in the pan and allow it to freeze for at least one hour.

  4. Remove the ice cream from the freezer. Set the pan in hot water to loosen the ice cream from the sides of the pan.

  5. Flip the pan onto a flat plate surface.

  6. Put any flavoring on the top of this layer. Many people use cookie crumbles, fresh fruit or nuts.

  7. Loosen the next layer of ice cream from the pan.

  8. Flip the pan upside down, on top of the first layer.

  9. Place the layered cake in the freezer for an hour.

  10. Using icing or slightly melted ice cream, ice the cake.

  11. Keep frozen. Remove cake from the freezer 30 minutes prior to cutting it.

  12. For variations of ice cream cake, the bottom or top layer may be constructed from actual cake.
