How to Match Auto Touch-Up Paint
A nick or scratch to the paint on your vehicle can ruin the look of your car. If you have enough money, you can always go out and get a professional paint job. The more cost-effective method to correct the problem requires you to match auto touch-up paint with the color of your vehicle.
Supply List
- Owner's manual (if available)
- Vehicle
- Color identification code
- VIN
- Locate the owner's manual to find if there is an instruction guide to finding the color identification plate. Look in the index under color identification plate, or you may have to search under the broader category of paint to find the guide.
- Follow the instructions given in your owner's manual. However, if you are unable to locate this guide, do not fret; try looking on the driver’s side door on the door’s frame. Typically, it is on a sticker or metal plate attached to the inside of the frame. The code is a combination of numbers and letters that represents your car's color.
- Write down your VIN number, also known as your vehicle identification number. Check your registration card for the number or look on your dashboard, near your windshield.
- Call places that sell touch-up paint to ensure they carry paint for your make and model of vehicle. Use your VIN number to identify the correct paint code when you go to a place that sells automobile touch-up paint. You may want to buy directly from the dealership where you purchased your car, truck or van.
- Go to the store or your dealership to purchase your paint. Make sure you bring your VIN number along with the paint identification code.
