How to Match LiPo Batteries to a Motor Size

LiPo is an abbreviation for lithium polymer batteries.  These are a type of rechargable battery that can be used to power RC cars.  When choosing a LiPo battery to power your RC car, you must be careful that you match the battery to the size of your car's motor.

  1. Compare the size of your motor to the size of your battery.  Do a physical size comparison by simply placing your battery next to your motor.  The battery and motor should be similar in size.  Check the output of your battery by reading the label on the side of the battery.  Individual LiPo batteries have an output of 3.7 volts when fully charged.

  2. Check the voltage requirement of your motor.  This information can either be found on a label within the motor, or in your owner's manual.  Make a note of the required voltage for your particular motor.  Most RC cars operate on about 8 volts of power, while RC airplanes require approximately 11.1 volts to operate.

  3. Compare the voltage needs of your motor to the voltage output of your battery.  Comparing the motor's requirement to the battery's output will help you determine how many LiPo batteries you need to power your RC motor.  In order to determine this, you will need to divide the input voltage of your motor by the output voltage of your battery.  If your motor requires 11.1 volts in order to operate, and your battery supplies 3.7 volts when fully charged, then you will need 3 LiPo batteries in order to operate your motor.
