How to Measure Television Dimensions
This size of television screens is commonly used to categorize them. The dimensions of a television set are typically provided by the manufacturer. The owner of a television set may need to determine these measurements directly when selling a used television set.
Things You'll Need:
- Tape measure
- Calculator
- Obtain the diagonal measurement of the television set. Use a tape measure to measure the distance from the lower left corner of the screen to the upper right corner of the screen. Round up to the nearest whole number of inches. Assume for the example that the diagonal measurement of the television set is 19.2 inches. This television set may be called a 20-inch set.
- Measure the height of the television set space with a tape measure. This is the distance from the upper left corner of the screen to the bottom left corner of the screen. Record this measurement in inches.
- Measure the width of the television set with a tape measure. This is the distance from the bottom left corner of the screen to the bottom right corner of the screen. Record this measurement in inches.
- Divide the width of the television set by its height. If this quotient is close to 1.33, the aspect ratio of your television set is 4-to-3. If this quotient is closer to 1.78, the aspect ratio of the television set is 16-to-9. Traditional television sets usually have an aspect ratio of 4-to-3, while widescreen television sets typically have an aspect ratio of 16-to-9.
