How to Measure Wooden Clogs

When properly fitted, wooden clogs are very comfortable. The procedure to make them
involves several drying processes which can take 2-3 weeks to complete, so plan ahead if you want them for a specific occasion. To get started, you need to provide your normal shoe size including width plus the measurements of your left and right insteps to the nearest
1/8 inch.

Besides being fashionable, traditional wooden clogs are considered a safety shoe. They have the CE mark as they can withstand almost any sharp object penetrating them and even concentrated acids. They are also popular as a gardening shoe. When this type of shoe is made by hand, it is usually made from sycamore, alder, willow and poplar woods. Machine made versions are typically made from birch.

If you are having wooden clogs made for you, most often you will need to provide your current shoe size and the measurement of each foot's instep. To measure your insteps with
socks on, wrap a flexible tape measure around each one and note the length to the nearest 1/8 inch.

Another method is to trace your foot. To do this you need:

  • Paper

  • Pen or pencil

  • Flexible measuring tape

  1. Stand with one foot on a piece of paper, wearing socks that you would typically wear with clogs.

  2. Trace around your foot with a pen or pencil.

  3. Measure the length of your traced foot from toe to heel. Note the measurement.

  4. Measure the traced ball of your foot from side to side. Note the measurement.

  5. Measure the instep of the traced foot by wrapping a flexible tape measure around each one. Note the length to the nearest 1/8 inch.

  6. Repeat the previous four steps on your other foot.

If you are looking at pre-made wooden clogs, measure the inside of the clog. A comfortable size will be approximately 1/2 inch longer than the length of your traced feet.
