How to Measure for Cabinet Doors

New cabinet doors can give your kitchen a brand new look and dimension. It is important that you get the right measurements for the doors to the perfect fit. This will prevent you from the hassle of purchasing the wrong size doors or doors that don’t open or close properly. Measuring for cabinet door is really simple and can be done in a few short minutes.

Things you'll need:

  • Measuring tape

  • Paper

  • Writing utensil

  1. Begin your measurements working your way from the top down. Put the measuring tape at the top of the cabinet opening and measure the cabinet all the way down to the very bottom of the opening. Round up the nearest 1/8-inch and write the measurements down on your paper.

  2. Measure the cabinets from side to side. Place the measuring tape on the left side of the cabinet door where it opens and measure all the way to the right side of the cabinet door where it closes. Again, round up the nearest 1/8-inch and write down the measurements on your paper.

  3. Place the measuring tape onto the outer edge of the cabinet and hook in on the outer edge of the cabinet opening. The edges of the cabinet will hold the hinges for the door. To make sure that the door will open properly, allow at least 5/8-inch of clearance in the direction that cabinet door will open. Write this measurement down on paper.

  4. Add one inch to both the height and the width measurements for the cabinet doors. This will allow for enough space for the cabinets to overlap an extra 1/2-inch on all sides.
