How to Measure for a Bay Window Installation
Bay windows add a touch of elegance to any home. These three-dimensional windows permit for added light through their expansive glass. The first step to installing one is to find the proper measurements for the window. Bay windows are measured very similarly to other standard windows.
- Remove any trim around the existing frame if you are replacing an existing window.
- Find the 2 x 4s which make up the frame of the window.
- Measure the inside of the rough opening where the window will be placed. You need to obtain both the width and length for measurements.
- Measure the width of the opening in three places, across the top, middle and bottom of the opening. Record your figures as you go.
- Use the same procedures for the height of the opening. Start on the left side measuring from top to bottom. Next, measure the middle, and finally, the right side. Write down all of your figures as you discover the measurements.
- Measure the inside where the glass intersects with the window sill. Obtain the width of the jamb by measuring from the sill to the outer portion of the window. If you are replacing a traditional window with a bay window, it is necessary to measure from the edge of the outside of the sill to the rim of the window on the house's exterior.
- It is always important to purchase a window that will fit. It is better to purchase a window which is larger than the opening rather than smaller, as it can always be made to fit.
