How to Mix Fragrance Oils
Essential fragrance oils are used to add a natural scent to many types of homemade products such as lotions, perfumes, soaps and air fresheners. You can experiment with the different types of oils until you find the scent that you like the best. Mixing these oils together is easy once you find the combination that you like the best.
- Locate the materials that you will need. To test out how different fragrance oils smell when combined you will need some clean cotton balls, a medicine dropper, pen and paper, your choice of fragrance oils and a glass jar with a lid.
- Add a drop or two of each fragrant oil that you would like to mix together onto a clean cotton ball. Be sure to record the amount of each oil that you added so that you can duplicate the scent later if you wish. For example, if you used 1 drop of sandalwood oil with 2 drops of lavender oil you would write down one part sandalwood and two parts of lavender.
- Place the cotton ball into the glass jar and tightly seal the lid.
- Allow the cotton ball to sit in the glass jar for about 10 minutes so that the oils can thoroughly mix together and form a new scent.
- Open the jar and smell the aroma that was created by your choice of essential fragrant oil combinations.
- Add another type of oil to the cotton ball if you would like to add to the scent, and then reseal the jar and allow another 10 minutes to pass. Be sure to record the new fragrant oil that you used onto your paper so that you can remember how to achieve the same result later on.
- Mix a larger batch of the fragrance that you created in a glass bowl by following the recipe you recorded on your paper. For example, if you used one part sandalwood, two parts of lavender and one part of tea tree fragrant oil, you can achieve the same scent by adding equal parts of tea tree and sandalwood with double the amount of lavender.
- Store your mixed essential fragrant oils in a dark glass jar or container until you are ready to use them.
