How to Mix Old and Modern Furniture
Mixing old and new furniture in your home can give it a unique and interesting look. Make sure that you choose your furniture items carefully and choose one style that you want to be dominant to get a look that is stylish and well matched.
- Choose one style of furniture that will make up the majority of the furniture in the room. Choose either modern furniture with antique accents or antique furniture with modern accents. This will allow you to decorate in a way where all furniture elements look good together and the style of your home does not look confusing.
- Add furniture together that has a similar shade, color, or texture. This will make new and old furniture look as though they belong together even though they are from different time periods.
- Find a few accent pieces to add to rooms that stand out. These pieces should be bold against the other elements in the room to add focal points that are exciting. Consider a modern clock to place on the wall or a large antique picture frame that can be used for photographs or posters.
- Mix furniture items that are used together with modern and old styles. Try adding modern chairs to an antique dining table or using an antique lamp next to a modern couch. This will give a unique look to furniture items. Make sure not to do this all over your home though or your furniture will look as though it is all mismatched and not put together well.
- Choose items to furnish your home that are simple and clean in both the old and modern style. This will make it much easier to put furniture items together. Steer clear of patterned items and bold colors that are hard to match like orange and yellow because these items will end up looking out of place.
