How to Mold an RC Boat

If you are a radio controlled boat enthusiast and want to buy some radio controlled boats, you may face out of reach prices of these boats in local market. You can buy expensive remote control boats or you can build one on your own. If you are a do-it-yourselfer then building your own remote control boat will be fun and rewarding for you.

  1. Read and learn. Before molding, you may need a lot of reading on processes and required materials. First step is to get the plans for the boat for which you want a mold. You may need to hire some expert to recalculate a schedule for your planned SOR.

  2. Research about materials. Even though most boats are molded with polyester resin, viny resin is stronger and provides better resistance against water absorption. You may also need to research about fabrics required. Select materials for resin and glass of your boat.

  3. Make a Plan. Complete your plan and collect all the required items. You also have to find a good covered workspace for your boat.

  4. Start with the Gelcoat. You may need a spray gun for gelcoat. GS 200-6 and GS100-6 are two common spray guns for gelcoat. Use any of the guns for gelcoat. Gelcoat is very important and is also the final finish on the outside of the boat. Rightly placed gelcoat can make the further process smoother and less repetitive.

  5. Make ribs in glass hull. Wait for the hull to get most of its layup. Once done, create ribs from ISO foam and stick where ever you want with resin. In the next step, use layers of glass to cover the foam. This will create rot-proof, tough and stiff box-beams in the hull.
