How to Mount Art Prints
Presentation is key when showing your work to a potential client, whether your piece is large or small. By mounting your art, you are creating a professional appearance and it is ready to go on display at a gallery or other type of art showing. When mounting, however, keep in mind that this permanently adheres the art to the board.
Items needed:
- Tape measure
- Mat board
- Foam core
- Cutting board
- Craft knife
- Drop cloth
- Spray adhesive
- Mounting stickers
- Measure your work of art with a tape measure and add anywhere between 2 and 6 inches to all of the sides. This represents the size of the mounting board. You can make the board any size you wish, as long as it is proportionate to the piece of art you are mounting.
- Place a mat board facedown on a flat surface and transfer your measurements onto the back of the board. If you have a rather large piece that you are mounting, foam core may be a better option, due to the fact that it is lightweight.
- Cut out the board, according to the measurement, using a craft knife. Make sure that you are cutting on top of a cutting board, so you do not damage the flat surface you are using. You need to run the knife along each side several times, in order to cut all the way through.
- Place your artwork on your mounting board and position it so that the sides are equal distance from the edges. The print needs to be closer to the top of the board, than it is to the bottom. This creates a grounding effect for your picture.
- Turn the art over and lay it on a flat surface, covered with a drop cloth. Spray adhesive onto the back in a sweeping motion, so that you cover the entire backing. Make sure that you hold the can 12 inches away from the surface when spraying. You can also choose to use mounting stickers and just place one in each corner.
- Turn your art print, so that the adhesive side if facing down on the mounting board and secure it in place, as positioned before. Run your fingers over the print lightly, to ensure that there are no air bubbles and that the print is secure.
