How to Move Antique Guns From One State to Another

While antique guns are nothing more than collectible pieces for most people, they are still firearms. There are laws that restrict and regulate the transportation of firearms between states. You need to make sure you are following all applicable laws to avoid any issues.

Whether you travel to different gun shows throughout the country or are moving with your antique guns you should know what is required to travel with them. Even if they are just for show you have to follow the regulations set up to restrict the movement of firearms between states.

  • Check on the laws in your state about firearms. Some states will allow you to travel easily with antique weapons, while others make no exclusion in the gun regulations for antiques. Check the same laws for the state you are planning on travelling in to.

  • Find licensing information for each state you plan on travelling in. A lot of states still require you to obtain a license for concealed weapons even if they are antique. Some states require this of any gun that can be fired. Apply for the license if necessary.

  • Make a chart to keep with you. The chart should detail the differences in the states you will be moving between. This way you're always prepared with what you'll need before travelling. As you travel to new areas you can update your chart. Keeping a chart updated means you'll always have the laws and other restrictions at the palm of your hand when you need them.

  • Check in to the laws and regulations regarding shipping the firearms. Those that travel to different gun shows frequently will often ship the larger items to avoid the hassle of dealing with a ton of permits and regulations. Just remember that if the item is lost or damaged you may not recover the full value of an antique piece.
