How to Move Glass Shelves
Glass shelving has a lot of perks to recommend it. It’s sleek, adds an air of elegance and can blend in with any paint job you happen to use on your walls. Yet there are a few drawbacks to be had if you are intent on owning glass shelving. Once of biggest is just how easy they can break. Due to their fragile nature, proper protection is required if you ever plan on moving them.
- Remove the Shelving: Before they can be properly packed, the shelves must first be removed. Never attempt to move glass shelving without removing them from their enclosure. Place each shelf in a soft, safe location and deal with them one at a time.
- Wrap the Shelving: In order to protect the shelves during transit, they must be properly wrapped. Wrapping them in ordinary newspaper is not going to provide enough protection and should therefore only be used as a preliminary action. The use of bubble wrap is recommended when wrapping glass shelving for transit as it can better protect the glass from any bumps or dings the box may receive.
- Box Each Shelf Separately: Thin boxes are available for just this purpose at your local moving store. Once wrapped in bubble wrap, place each shelf into its own separate box and fill the box with small-grade mover’s popcorn to better insulate the glass within the box.
- Do Not Stack the Boxes: In order to prevent cracks and dings from occurring, it is best not to stack the shelving together during transit as the combined weight of the glass may be enough to break or irreparably damage a shelf placed lower in the stack. Always try to place boxes within a confined space and preferably standing on end to prevent bowing or breaking.
