How to Mulch

Mulch is a simple way to reuse natural materials from your home and garden. It can easily add nutrients to the soil to help your garden grow. You can make your own mulch instead of purchasing it from a garden center. This article will instruct you on how to mulch.

How to Mulch

  1. Decide how much mulch is needed. Several inches deep is the most common amount of mulch needed. Also consider how big the area is so you can determine how many square feet of mulch is needed.

  2. Locate an area of the yard to spread out your mulch pile. There should not be any shrubs or debris under the pile. Any grass under the pile will die. Direct sunlight will help the pile decompose quickly.

  3. The best time to create a mulch pile is during the fall. After raking the leaves, run them under a lawn mower to mulch them. Place the leaves in the mulch pile that was created. Continue this as the leaves fall.

  4. Use a chain saw to cut any tree limbs that have fallen. Use a wood chipper to create wood mulch from the tree limbs. Add the wood to the mulch pile or create a separate pile.

  5. Use a rake to turn the pile once every two weeks. If the pile becomes to dry, add a small amount of water.

  6. Once the pile has decomposed, it is ready to be used in your garden and around the base of the trees.
