  1. Locate the studs with a studfinder where the siding will be attached. The nails should be placed 16-inches on center.

  2. Mark the studs.

  3. Trim 1 1/2-inch strip from the siding. Install along the bottom grade line of the house.

  4. Start at the corner of the house and measure six inches, plus the width of the siding plank up from the grade. Mark this spot with a pencil. Repeat at the opposite end. Snap a chalk line between the marks.

  5. Set the first clapboard so that it overlaps the installed starter board.

  6. Attach the siding with the nail gun to the identified studs. Alternatively, the siding can be hand nailed to the studs with a hammer. Continue the procedure until the entire first row is attached to the bottom of the house.

  7. Place the next board over the top of the first line allowing for a lap of 1 3/8-inches.

  8. Repeat this process for each subsequent row installed.

  9. Cut the clapboards with a utility knife around the window sills and any other exterior openings.

  10. Seal openings with caulking and install decorative trim for a finished look.
