How to Remove Old Paint From Clapboard Siding

How to Paint Clapboard Siding

You may decide to paint clapboard siding if you would like to add a new color to your home or if your siding looks worn.  To paint siding the right way, make sure that you have all of your materials prepared and you have chosen the right outdoor paint to provide the best coverage.

Things You'll Need:

  • Sandpaper or wood putty

  • Soap and water

  • Roller

  • Medium and small paintbrushes

  • Paint tray

  • Outdoor paint

  • Drop cloth

  • Extension ladder

  1. Inspect your clapboard siding before you begin looking for areas that have been damaged.  Sand areas down or add wood putty to holes or dents.

  2. Wash the siding with soap and water to remove any dirt or debris from the area.  This will allow paint to adhere properly to the siding.

  3. Prepare the materials that you need to paint.  You will need a roller, medium and small paintbrushes, a paint tray and paint.  Make sure that you have chosen paint that is appropriate for your siding in an outdoor variety.

  4. Place a drop cloth underneath the area where you will begin to protect the ground from any spills or dripping paint.  Mix your paint thoroughly and pour the paint into your paint tray.

  5. Position an extension ladder against your home so you are able to reach high areas.  Your ladder should be placed by the top left corner of the area you will be painting.  For the easiest painting you will be starting at the top and working left to right.

  6. Roll out paint on to the clapboard siding to lay down an adequate amount of paint.  Use your paintbrush to smooth out the paint on to the siding making sure to get into all of the crevices and corners of your siding.

  7. Paint areas in sections of three or four pieces of siding and move your ladder to the right as you go.  Once you have reached the edge of your siding move to the next section down from where you began and continue across.

  8. Inspect the clapboard siding once you have finished to make sure that you have painted all areas.  Use a small paintbrush to fill in any crevices or areas that you have missed.
