How to Open a DUI School

DUI schools provide classes where DUI offenders can go to fulfill their court mandated obligations.  Attending a DUI school can help reduce an individual's jail time or the amount of fines he or she must pay.  The goal of DUI school is to teach drivers the danger of drinking and driving in an effort to reduce the frequency of DUI infractions.

  1. Investigate the balance of supply and demand for DUI classes in your geographical area.  In order to accurately gauge if a DUI school is needed or would be profitable where you live, you need to find out approximately how many people are required to attend DUI classes in a given month or per year.  Then, evaluate how many DUI schools already exist where you live and if the number and size of classes is adequate to meet the needs of the public.  If there aren't enough classes for the number of people assigned to them, then a business opportunity exists.

  2. Research state requirements.  There may be state requirements for instructors of a DUI school, so it is necessary to research the laws in your state to ensure compliance.  Your state may demand that instructors have experience or education in the fields of substance abuse or education.

  3. Find and hire an instructor who meets the educational or experience requirements.

  4. Contact the state department of public safety to get a list of what things must be taught at DUI school.

  5. Rent or buy a building to hold classes at.  Choosing a building which is easy to get to is vital to the success of your DUI school.  Drivers convicted of DUI don't have their licenses, so choosing a building close to a bus route would be ideal.

  6. Advertise and start offering classes.  Make sure people know about your school because if they don't know it exists, they won't choose your school for their needs.
