How to Locate DUI Checkpoints

Law enforcement agencies sometimes participate in saturated patrol efforts to discourage motorists from driving under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants. When a person travels through a DUI checkpoint, they can be subjected to sobriety tests. There are many places to find information on these patrol efforts.

  • Listen to local radio and television stations that provide local news. Public information officers will often provide many media outlets with information about upcoming DUI checkpoints. Local police try to encourage safe and sober driving over the radio and television.

  • Pick up the phone and call local, county and state police departments to inquire about any upcoming patrol efforts. Simply tell them that you need to know about any checkpoints in order to avoid travel delays.

  • Keep a police scanner turned on to listen for any law enforcement activity in the area before traveling. Scanners provide people with radio reports of police activity when it is happening.

  • Obtain information online about DUI checkpoints using a search engine. Simply type in the city and state where you reside along with, “DUI checkpoint” into the search engine. Review all of the news stories and websites that appear to determine when and if any checkpoints are happening.

  • Ask other motorists if they know of any checkpoints that are taking place. Many operations take place during highly traveled holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Eve, The 4th of July, Labor Day and Memorial Day. The best time to ask about checkpoints is around a holiday.
