How to Operate a Bass Fishing Boat

Bass fishing is an immensely popular sport with outdoorsmen all over the nation. Bass fish occur naturally in all regions of the country, where they are avidly pursued by anglers. Many bass fisherman choose to invest in bass fishing boats.

  1. Learn to operate the motor on your bass fishing boat. Most bass fishing boats use an outboard motor. This means learning to properly trim the motor for easy steering once you have entered the water.

  2. Learn to properly steer the bass boat. This is largely done by practicing once you have gotten your boat into the water. Look for an open, low-traffic area to practice in.

  3. Study navigation. This will prevent you from getting lost when you are navigating in large bodies of water.

  4. Learn to recognize and avoid water hazards. Common water hazards include rocks, submerged trees, and strong currents.

  5. Put your boat on a trailer and pull it to a boat ramp along your desired body of water.

  6. Tilt the engine forward, or into the boat, so that it does not scrape the ramp as you back the trailer down the ramp. Continue down the ramp until the rear of the boat, or stern, is floating.

  7. Push the boat off of the trailer and secure it to the shore or a docking point until you move your car to a nearby parking area. An alternative to securing the boat is having a friend operate the boat until your return.

  8. Navigate the boat to the area that you intend to fish in.
