How to Operate a Double Hung Window

Many homes today are being built with double hung windows and many more homeowners are having them installed as replacement windows. There are many benefits to double hung windows and once you know how they operate you will see why they are so popular.

Having a double hung window is a pure joy if you really like to clean your windows on a regular basis. These style windows permit you to accomplish this task and stay inside your home while you are doing it. No more going outside, using a ladder, or a pole brush and still not doing a good job. Double hung windows absolutely eliminate that whole process.

Operating a Double hung window:

  1. Stand in front of the window.

  2. Release the locks located on top of the bottom sash of the window.

  3. Lift the bottom window approximately the width of your fist or about 4 inches.

  4. Look for the latch buttons located on the same part of the window the locks are located on. (They will be on the outside edge of the sash.)

  5. Use your fingers to slide the latch buttons in towards the center of the window.

  6. Pull gently in your direction and the sash will fall towards you. Now you can easily clean the outside of the window.

  7. Close the window by holding it in the center of the window and gently placing it back in the frame and pushing it shut. When it closes, it will snap and you know it is locked back in.

  8. Take the same steps to open the upper sash.

  9. Slide it down again using your fist as a measure or about a 4” space. Locate the latch buttons on the sash near the outside edges and slide them in as you did with the bottom sash and pull the window in towards you.

  10. Repeat the process as you did with the bottom window sash.
