How to Operate a Freshwater Fishing Boat

Freshwater fishing can easily be done from land. Finding a nice spot to fish from is usually not a problem, but some people prefer to take a boat and actually get out on the water. If that is something you enjoy doing, then you will have to learn how to operate a freshwater fishing boat.

  1. Become familiar with all of the boat controls before you turn the boat on. Know what the gauges mean and how to read them. Know the boating regulations for the body of water that you will be operating the boat in.

  2. Turn the boat on. Make sure that the boat as enough fuel and that it has enough life vests for everybody that is on it.

  3. Make sure the path you wish to go in is free from other boaters and people that may be swimming. If you are moving to the front, slowly push the throttle forward. If you are moving to the back, slowly pull the throttle back.

  4. Use the steering wheel to turn the fishing boat left or right. If you are backing up, use the steering wheel to turn the boat so that you can face out into the open water. Once you are on your desired course, use the steering wheel to maintain that direction. Use the throttle to maintain proper speed. When you need to do so, slowly pull back on the throttle to stop the boat.

  5. Stop the boat when you have reached the spot you wish to fish at. Turn the boat off. A fishing boat that is turned on will scare some of the fish away. Keep the keys in the ignition so that you do not lose them.

  6. Repeat the above steps to get back to your point of origin.
