How to Operate a Jackhammer
If you have a damaged piece of concrete that needs to be removed, the tool of choice for the job will be a jackhammer. A jackhammer is also known as a pneumatic drill. Most jackhammers can be rented from your local home improvement store, by either the day or hour. It is important to know how to properly operate the tool.

1. Suit up in your protective gear before operating the device. This is very important. A jackhammer is extremely noisy, so earplugs are a necessity. Safety goggles are needed to protect your eyes from any flying debris. Gloves will allow for a tight grip on the machine and boots will help you to maintain your footing on the broken concrete.
2. Install the proper bit into the jackhammer. There are five bits which can be used. They include:
- A spade, which provides a flat finish for concrete.
- The flat tip, which allows for directional control.
- The point, which is used for general breaking.
- The stake driver, which drives concrete form stakes.
- The scabbler, which provides smooth surface finishing.
Each performs their own specific job, so it is important to know which is which.
3. Start from the outside of your project and work inward in your area to be removed.
4. Plug the jackhammer into the electric cord. It is important to have a heavy duty rated UL cord for this piece of equipment.
5. Pick-up the jackhammer by the handle, which does not contain the trigger. The trigger is generally located on the grips.
6. Lean the device at a slight angle, with the top close to your waistline.
7. Angle the tip at a slight angle. This is important or the device will be difficult to dislodge from the concrete, once it has broken through.
8. Grip the handles firmly and pull the trigger.
Remember, it is important to let the device rest from time to time. Therefore, it should only be running when in actual operation.
