How to Operate a Zero Turn Mower
Zero turn lawn mowers are very useful for using in areas that require lots of turning; like in the woods. These mowers can turn on a dime because the left side wheels work differently than the right side wheels. This allows for very efficient lawn mowing in tight areas.
- Adjust the seats if the option is available on your mower. You want to be comfortable and be able to reach the control bars easily when operating the mower. A zero turn mower won't have the traditional steering wheel found on most mowers. Two control bars will move the mower in every direction you need.
- Move the control bars to the neutral position before starting the engine. Pushing the bars away from your body will make the mower go forward; pulling them towards you will make the mower go in reverse. The mower is in neutral when the bars are straight up and down.
- Start the engine; you might need to push in the brake on some models. Each model will vary and you might need to read the manual or talk with a representative at the dealership for proper starting procedure.
- Turn the mower on a dime by moving one control bar forward or backwards. Pushing the right control bar forward will make the mower move forward and turn left on a dime. Pulling the left control arm backwards will make the mower move backwards and to the left.
- Move the deck height up or down for cutting grass by using the adjustment lever. This lever should be within reaching distance, but location will vary for each model.
- Start the blades by pulling or pushing a button on your mowers control panel. This button should be clearly marked and easy to see.
