How to Organize a Shed for Storage
Storage sheds can be a great place to store extra items, tools and important lawn equipment. After a period of time, sheds can become overwhelmed with items and no organization. Organizing a shed can be done rather quickly when following a few simple steps.
- Take a mental inventory of what is in the shed. It may be a good idea to begin by writing a list and making categories of what needs to remain in the shed, and what needs to be removed. Sometimes drawing a picture can help some people mentally understand where they are going to put everything in the shed. Some people are more visual than others and need that extra visualization of a picture.
- Compile a list of items that need to be purchased in order to organize the storage shed. This can be as little as a couple of nails, or as much as buckets of paint and a completely new workbench.
- Visit a local home improvement store and purchase all the necessary items from your list. It may be a good idea to pick up a pair of work gloves to protect the hands while moving and organizing items.
- Create more lighting if necessary by adding hanging lights or florescent lights to the storage shed. This will allow someone to come to the shed to get whatever is needed, and be able to see in the shed when it is dark. This is also a safety issue, so that the shed is safe to visit when it is dark outside. In the winter months, this can be fairly early compared to the summer months.
- Remove everything from the shed, and organize the items into like areas where they will be placed back into the shed.
- Add shelves if they will be necessary to store the items that will be put back in the shed. This should be done before all of the items are put back into the shed. Put all of the items in the shed in an organized manner.
- Add a lock to the shed, so all of the equipment and tools are safe.
