How to Prepare Your Car for Long-Term Storage

It is important to get your car ready to be stored for an extended amount of time. Not preparing your car for storage can lead to to repairs that could have been avoidable. Storing your car properly not only protects your car, but helps you avoid unnecessary expenses.

1. Choose a location for your car. You want to store your car in location that is dry, clean and has the ability to keep rodents out. Moisture in the facility could cause your car to rust. If you cannot find a suitable location, try to find a car storage facility near your location.

2. Replace the oil in the car with synthetic oil. Regular oil breaks down faster than synthetic oil, which could allow the engine to corrode.

3. Fill up the gas tank completely. By leaving the gas tank empty, moisture can cause the tank to rust.

4. Disconnect the battery if you will be away for some time. For extended periods of time, it is best to take the battery out. The battery will probably need to be replaced when you return.

5. Wipe the inside of the car with a conditioner made for leather or vinyl. Use lithium grease to clean the tires. Spray the grease on the towel before applying it to the exterior of the car.

6. Wash the car after you have done all of the above steps. Be sure to wash it thoroughly.

7. Wax and buff the car. This will complete the steps of preparation and keep your car in good condition.
