How to Paint Bathroom Floor Tile

If the tile in your bathroom floor is looking old, painting it can make it look new again. You can paint your bathroom floor tile faster than you can put down a new one, and it is much less expensive. You can learn how to paint bathroom floor tile in a few short steps.

Supplies:

  • Household cleaner

  • Bleach

  • Sponge

  • Abrasive pad

  • Gallon bucket

  • Electric hand sander

  • Fine grit sandpaper

  • Damp cloth

  • Vacuum cleaner

  • Paint brush or roller

  • Primer

  • Satin finished oil-based paint

  • Foam paint roller

  • Polyurethane

  1. Use a household cleaner to clean the tile and grout to remove all dirt from the bathroom floor. You can use a sponge and abrasive pad to clean the grout and tile from the bathroom floor.

  2. Use bleach to remove any mold found on the tiles. Put one cup of bleach into a gallon of hot water. Dip a sponge in the bleach mixture and use it to wipe the mold from the floor.

  3. Make sure there is no damage to the bathroom floor before you start painting. If you see any damage to the tiles or grout, you will have to fix this before you can paint.

  4. Use an electric hand sander and fine grit sandpaper to sand the tiles. Keep sanding until the glossy finish is rough and no longer glossy.

  5. Vacuum the bathroom floor to remove the dust from sanding, and then wipe the tiles using a damp cloth.

  6. Apply two coats of primer used for high glossy surfaces to the bathroom floor. Follow the instructions on the bottle of primer. Allow the floor to dry completely before continuing.

  7. Sand the tiles once they are primed using fine grit sandpaper. Do this very lightly and by hand. Wipe the tiles using a damp cloth to remove the sanding dust when you are finished.

  8. Apply the paint to the bathroom floor. Use satin finished oil-based paint and apply it with a paintbrush or roller. Apply many thin coats to the floor, and then allow drying for at least 48 hours.

  9. Use a foam paint roller to apply two coats of polyurethane to the bathroom floor to help protect the paint.
