How to Paint Modular Cube Storage Systems
Painting a modular cube storage system is similar to painting any kind of particle board furniture. The slick surface requires a certain set of steps to ensure the paint job looks good long after it dries. If you're serious about changing the color of your cube storage, follow the painting steps exactly for the best results.
Items Needed
- Screwdriver or wrench
- Ziptop bag
- Cloths
- Cleaning solution (see suggestions below)
- Paint
- Paint supplies (brushes, rollers, paint pan, etc.)
- Prepare your storage cubes by disassembling all parts of the system. Detach any screws or bolts that hold the system together and set them aside in a safe place, such as a ziptop bag, where you can find them later.
- Move the cubes outdoors or create a wide open space in your house for painting. Lay down newspaper to avoid getting paint on your floor or carpet. If you decide to paint indoors, make sure you work in a well-ventilated room to avoid inhaling fumes.
- Wipe the cubes down with water or a mild detergent. A mixture of white vinegar and water is a mild cleanser that leaves no messy residue. Make sure the cubes are completely dry before applying any paint.
- Use a paint brush or roller to apply the first coat of paint. Paint all exposed sides with smooth, one-directional strokes. Avoid using too much paint as it will cause drips. For this reason, a small hand roller works best for painting this type of wood.
- Allow the paint to dry for a few hours or overnight. Apply a second coat of paint once the first coat is completely dry. Wait a few more hours for the second coat to dry.
- Flip the cube over to expose the unpainted side. Apply two coats to the unpainted section, allowing an ample amount of drying time between coats.
- Reassemble your storage system, taking care not to scrape the cubes in the process.
