How to Set Up Water Storage Systems

Having an emergency water supply is a very good idea in case of an emergency. Sometimes your water can be cut off without any warning. Building a water storage system isn't very difficult. Having extra water around will give you some piece of mind.

Things You'll Need:

  • Water Tanks

  • Shovel

  • PVC Pipe

  • Saw

  • Screws

  • Electric Drill

  • Bricks

  1. Purchase a few water tanks at a home improvement store. The size of the tanks will depend on how much water you want to store for an emergency. You might be able to look at your water bill to use as a reference to see how many gallons of water you use in a month.

  2. Cut your gutter downspouts so they are slightly higher than the water tanks.

  3. Install PVC pipe on the end of each downspout. Install the pipe on the downspouts with screws. You shouldn't need heavy duty screws, just a small screw on either side to hold the pipe on.

  4. Slide the tank under the downspout so the pipe is lined up with the opening of the water tank. It would probably be a good idea to sit the tanks on bricks to provide a much sturdier base. Over time the rainwater from the gutters will fill the tanks up. Some people even install a valve on the bottom of the tanks to easily get water when needed. This water can easily be used to water plants, trees and your lawn. You'll obviously need to run the water through a filter system if you plan on using it to cook or clean dishes.
