How to Paint Outbuildings
Outbuildings, also known as sheds or barns, sit out in all kinds of weather. Painting an outbuilding can improve the appearance and make it look new again. It is simple to paint an outbuilding, depending upon how big it is, and can be done as a weekend project, depending upon the weather.
- Watch the weather and find a day that is going to be dry to paint your outbuilding. Do not paint the outbuilding if the weather is going to be cold or very humid. The weather should not be too hot. An average temperature of 75 degrees is the best time to paint the outbuilding.
- Select the paint you want to use to paint your outbuilding. Visit a paint store and bring samples home to check against the outbuilding.
- Hose off the outbuilding to remove all dirt and dust. Use a brush to remove dirt that is stuck on the building. Let the outbuilding dry completely before you put on the primer.
- Apply primer to the outbuilding to seal the wood. Using an oil-based primer is best for an outside building. You can use a roller to apply the primer, and use a brush to apply primer in the eaves, trim, and in cracks. Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours, but make sure you paint the building within 48 hours of applying the primer.
- Apply the paint to the building. Use a latex based topcoat using a brush and roller. Allow the first coat of paint to completely dry, and then apply a second coat of paint on the outbuilding.
