How to Remodel Old Stone Outbuildings

One of the age old building techniques used throughout time is building with stone. Stone has an impressive list of benefits including durability and the unique ability to hold in heat during the cold winter months. Even though stone structures are durable, from time to time it may be necessary to remodel them to solidify their integrity.

  1. Inspect the walls and ensure that they are all structurally intact. You may be able to replace the mortar and restore the walls in some instances. However, in other cases, you may need to demolish the sections of the walls that are beyond repair. If you need to replace them, make a note of their look beforehand so that you can reconstruct them in their natural appearance.

  2. Examine the foundation on the structure. You may need to reinforce the existing foundation in some instances.

  3. Look at the windows and the roof. In some cases, the plaster that is found around them may be beyond repair, and may require that you completely remove the plaster.

  4. Inspect the roof to see if it requires any special attention if it is framed by wood. In the event that is it, inspect all the lumber around it as it may be necessary to remove and replace it due to corrosion or rotting.

  5. Rebuild any of the walls that were found to be less than sound. Doing so will increase the integrity and strength of the existing walls. Rebuild the roof with fresh wood and restore the windows and doorframes by installing stone frames that are securely anchored with both mortar and cement.
