How to Paint Playground Balls

Most playground balls look basic, dull and simple. Playground balls can be painted to add your own design to make them stand out. You must be careful to get paint that will last and won't crack or peel since the ball will constantly be kicked, bounced and thrown outside.

Things you'll need:

  • Dish soap

  • Water

  • Rags

  • Rubber bonding paint

  • Bowl

  • Tire paint pens

  • Paint brush

  • Stencils

  • Tape

  1. Wash and dry the rubber balls to keep from painting over dirt.

  2. Select a rubber bonding paint in a color that you want to use. It may be possible that the company can match a particular color for you if you cannot find it.

  3. Read the manufacture’s directions on the rubber bonding paint can to know how to paint the ball. Rubber bonding paint is made so that it will not flake off like acrylic paint does.

  4. Place a playground ball in a bowl that fits the ball. This will help to hold the ball still as you paint.

  5. Apply a light layer of paint to one half of the playground ball and allow it to dry for at least 15 minutes. Once the first half is dry, flip it over in the bowl and paint the other half of the ball. Repeat this process to coat the ball with as many layers of paint as desired. Any amount of bonding paint layers between two to five layers will be work good on the ball. Make sure all the layers are thin, as they help the paint to stick and not flake off the ball.

  6. Draw designs on the ball using tire markers, if desired. You can also tape stencils on the balls to make designs.

  7. Repeat Steps 1 through 6 for any additional playground balls that you want to be painted.
