How to Plan a Kid's Play Structure

Children's outdoor play sets are different than they were years ago. In the past they were made of metal swing sets not too difficult to put together. Play structures now are commonly made of wood and include all the bells and whistles that children love. When building a playground for your kids, you want to make sure it is sturdy and stable.

Items Needed:

  • Power drill

  • Wrench

  • Wood mulch

  • four-by-four lumber

  • Nuts and bolts

  • Drill bit set

  1. Choose an area of your yard large enough for your playground. This section of your yard should be flat ground without any slope to it. No roots sticking out of the ground, and no holes. This could be a danger for your children.

  2. Use your four-by-four lumber to build the design for the structure. Because you are building this from scratch, you can let your imagination run wild and provide your kids a unique and personalized playground. Use heavy duty nuts and bolts to hold the lumber together.

  3. Make sure that the swings do not interfere with other areas of the structure, because it could result in injuries.

  4. Use soft mulch or sand to place under the jungle gym. There are types of mulch that are specifically designed for children's play areas. Grass is not ideal under the play set because it will eventually die from children's constant playing.

  5. Ensure that the playground is put together safely and there are no sharp points that could hurt or cause damage to anyone. Go over all areas before letting the kids run loose.
