How to Pass a Driver's License Eye Test
Often passing the visual acuity test for the DMV may be intimidating, especially if you wear glasses, contact lenses or are aging. Having good vision with correction is essential to being a safe driver. The DMV tests consist of a visual exam for both near and distance vision, a written exam and a skills exam. You must pass all tests to obtain your driver's license.
- Schedule an appointment with the DMV.
- Have all required documents and forms ready when you go to the DMV.
- Fill out as many forms as you can at home before going to the appointment.
- Go to the front desk. Tell the receptionist why you are there. She will give you a ticket.
- Wait in the waiting room. TV screens will show ticket numbers of clients being served. Wait for your number to appear on the TV screen and for your number to be called.
- Go to the window announced on the intercom and that is displayed on the TV screen.
- Ask questions if unclear as to policy and procedures.
- Put on your glasses before taking the eye exam. If you can see the chart's smallest letters or numbers without visual correction, take the test without your glasses so you will not have a restricted license.
- Read the wall chart and the chart in the Optec 1000 machine.
- The attendant will cover one eye, then the other. Then you will be tested with both eyes.
- Minimum vision requirements are 20/40 both eyes.
- One eye 20/40 and 20/70 other eye will also pass.
- Follow the attendant's instructions exactly.
- Take your time, do not rush if you are nervous.
- You will be given a book to test your near vision.
- When you pass the eye exam, you will be given the written exam.
