How to Pass the Citizenship Test

One of the requirements to become an American citizen is to pass the citizenship test. The test contains questions about American history, government and geography. Although it may seem difficult, the government gives you all the tools that you need to pass.

  1. Immerse yourself in American culture. This can be done well before you take the test. Watching the evening news is a great way to learn basic information about how the government works.

  2. Contact your local library. They can help you in two different ways. First, they can help you locate books that will help you with your test preparation. In fact, there are books that are written specifically on the subject. The library may also be able to help you locate a test preparation course that is held in the area.

  3. Visit the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) website. You will find a sample test on their site that will list all of the possible questions that you can encounter on the test. Print out the sample test and use it as a study sheet to help you prepare for test day.

  4. Get a good night of rest on the day before the exam. On the day of the test, make sure that you eat well. You want to make sure that your body is not fatigued in any way when you take the test. Remain calm and focused while you take the test. If you have any questions during testing, ask the BCIS officer for assistance.
