How to Pay Custody Lawyers

When it comes to a child custody case, having a good lawyer is always a wise idea. Competent legal counsel will help you have a better chance of getting the outcome that you want. Legal help is not cheap and knowing how to pay your lawyer is very important.

  • Ask the lawyer their preferred form of payment before you sign any paperwork. Know how much they expect to pay and how they wish to be paid. Some lawyers charge an upfront fee, while others may charge by the hour. Even when you pay an upfront fee, the lawyer may charge you more money if the custody case takes longer than expected. Be sure to know exactly what services you are getting for your payment.

  • Find out what form of payment that the lawyer will take. Cash and check are usually the preferred payment methods.

  • Know if the lawyer allows you to pay them in installments. Some lawyers will demand to be paid upfront, while other lawyers will allow you to pay them in installments.

  • Know if you will be billed for any expenses that the lawyer has to deal with. Sometimes these expenses are not mentioned when you retain the lawyer's services. Be sure to read any contract that you sign when you hire your lawyer so you know about any expense charges you may be invoiced for later on.

  • Be sure to pay your lawyer what you owe them. The lawyer can drop your case at anytime for non-payment. If you are paying by installments, try to pay before the due date.
