How to Perform Aromatherapy Therapy

Aromatherapy is a popular form of alternative medicine wherein fragrances are used to cure or treat various health problems. The sources of the aroma are often thought to have antimicrobial or antibacterial properties while also being able to treat anxiety, phobia and other mental problems.

  1. Familiarize yourself with the theory of aromatherapy. This involves knowing which scents cure or treat which illnesses and how best to use aromatic materials. It is also important to know the potential side effects and harm that may be caused by the use of certain materials often used in aromatherapy.

  2. Procure aromatic material. Aromatic oils, and some products of distillation, bath salts and certain dried aromatic plants can also be effective, but aromatic oils are the most commonly used. These will be the sources of aroma for the therapy. Oils may be used separately or blended together.

  3. Decide on a method of using the scents. There may be a preferred method involving the use of certain devices like oil-burners and vaporizers, but in many cases there is no need for any special apparatus. In the case of oil burners, these devices usually consist of a candle holder and a small bowl for the oil which is held over the flame. Usually the flame is from a tea-light candle. The oil is placed in the bowl and the candle is lit. The burning oil produces a strong scent.

  4. Use the oils according to instructions. Some oils can be placed on the skin to be used as massage oils or as perfume. Some modes of application involve placing a small amount of the scent on a cloth or napkin and sniffing from it as needed. The oils may also be used by placing them in an empty asthma inhaler and inhaling deeply.
