How to Pick a Leotard for Gymnastics Class

A proper leotard allows gymnasts to move and tumble freely without impediments. An ill-fitting leotard, though, can cause someone to become self-conscious, as well as limit a body’s full range of movement. Base your leotard purchase on the fit, durability and comfort.

  • Ask your gymnast instructor for any tips purchasing the right leotard. Your instructor has much experience with the field and can point you in the right direction.

  • Try on your leotards before purchasing them, especially if new to leotard shopping. Some leotards will differ in size due to the way it’s cut or designed.

  • Select leotards made from cotton, lycra or spandex. If you are only using the leotards to practice or work out in, it is best to choose simple patterns and colors.

  • Move around in the leotard. It should cover all undergarments not be too tight. Check the pelvic area. The leg opening should not be too tight or too baggy.

  • Check the top of the leotard. If it’s too low cut, it may be a ballerina's leotard and inappropriate for tumbling and aggressive movement. Leotards that bare the midriff may not be ideal, either. The skin around the midriff may become slick from sweat.

  • Feel the thickness of the material. It must be durable enough to hold up with the normal wear and tear of movement and washing.

  • Purchase more than one leotard, especially if you attend classes frequently.

  • Order leotards online once you understand and know your size and fit. It can be easier, cheaper and more convenient.
