How to Pick a Truck Camper

The purchase of a truck camper can be a great thing for those wanting a recreation vehicle, but cannot afford a RV. The process of picking a truck camper can be stressful, but the most important thing is to make sure it is the right size for your truck.

  1. Determine the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating or GVWR of you truck. This is assigned by the maker of the truck to get you an idea of the average amount of combined truck and cargo weight it can handle. You can locate this number on the driver's side door sill. You will subtract the truck and passengers’ weight from this number to get the amount of weight you truck can handle in cargo. Buy a camper that works for your truck's GVWR.

  2. Measure your truck bed. Some truck beds are eight feet long and some are six feet. Make sure you know how long yours is before you purchase a camper for it.

  3. Consider the features offered on campers. Do you need something simple for small camping trips? Do you plan on using it for extended travels? You can buy campers fully equipped with showers, bathrooms and even kitchens.

  4. Do not forget to think about price. The amount you must pay for a camper can greatly affect you final decision. The campers with all the special features are obviously more expensive. If price is a huge factor for you then you might want to buy a used truck camper. This can be done at dealerships, online or from a private seller.
