Tips on Getting a Book Published

How to Pick an Online Publisher

Publishing your first book is an accomplishment few achieve. Computers and the Internet have changed the way books are submitted for publication. Many publishing options are available to the aspiring writer. Companies such as Lulu.com, CafePress allow writers to publish themselves. Traditional publishing companies print both in digital form and physical books.

  1. Decide if you want to publish yourself or do you want a more traditional relationship with a publisher.

  2. Look for initial publication price vs no upfront fees to publish your e-book. Companies who charge no upfront fees take a portion of the commission. Compare both types of publishing procedures and see which one will give you the best service with the most money in your pocket.

  3. Carefully review the contract. Have an attorney look at the contract with you.  Understand the fine print. Don't be afraid to ask questions about phrases that are unclear or ambiguous.

  4. Protect your copyrights. Some publishing companies take copyright others allow copyright to be retained by the author. Keeping your copyrights protects your creative masterpiece from being changed in a manner that you may not approve of or being turned into a film excluding your input.

  5. Publishing companies often specialize in specific areas of literature. A company who publishes children's books may not publish science fiction. Choose a company who is reputable and known in the specific genre you are writing.

  6. Look for time in the industry and quality of publications they have produced. Choose a company who has produced award winning books and yet who works with fresh talent.
